REACH stands for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. It is a Regulation of the European Union aimed at ensuring a high level of health and environmental protection through controlling the most harmful chemical substances introduced to the Community Market, all the while increasing the competitiveness of the EU chemical sector. Furthermore, this Regulation promotes alternative methods of risk assessment for chemical substances in order to reduce the number of tests carried out on animals. It applies to all chemical substances – not only the ones used in industrial processes, but also those accompanying us in our everyday lives, such as cleaning agents, paints, as well as components of clothing, furniture or electrical appliances.
The REACH system provides a much easier access to information about the substance’s properties and the dangerous components included in mixtures. Thus, the implementation of REACH facilitates risk management and contributes to the rationalization of the product range.
To adapt to the above, both the producers and the importers have to prepare and file a detailed registration documentation. And although the registration process itself is spread in time, it is right now that its final stage is coming to an end. Starting from the 1st of June 2018 it will only be possible to market substances in the quantity of 1.000 kg annually and more if they are fully registered or have been pre-registered and stockpiled since the time, when pre-registration was still in force.
